Vintage postcard of Elsecar - Sepia Saturday 54

When I was looking through my vintage postcards for something sepia that I'd not yet blogged about, this one leapt out at me. As this postcard is of Yorkshire, I'm more than sure that Alan can tell us all loads more about it, but again for me the location is somewhere I've only ever visited via vintage postcard.

Real photographic, vintage postcard of Church Street, Elsecar, South Yorkshire

  1. I have been to Yorkshire but it was well over 30 years ago! It will be interesting to see what Alan can tell you about this one.

  2. Elsecar is a former mining village near Barnsley. Its last pit was closed in the 1960s. It would be interesting to get a photo of that street today.

  3. This little street has beautiful buildings. I like how it's so straight and at the end (or at least in the distance) is a church. Do you happen to know the approximate date of the photograph?

  5. Great card .
Elsecar is one of a string of mining villages near Barnsley. The local pit was owned and operated by the Fitzwilliam family from nearby Wentworth Woodhouse. Their story (and partly the story of Elsecar) is told in Catherine Bailey's splendid book "Black Diamonds" (Will that do, TBear?)

  6. Thanks Alan - knew we could rely on you. Does the place look anything like that today?
