Vintage postcards of royalty and wedding greetings

Royal Wedding fever has gripped the nation here today, but I've been busy doing other things. My wife however has been enjoying the occasion enough for both of us. Not to be completely left out I have dug out some vintage postcards with a wedding and a royal family feel to them. Happy PFF everyone.

Vintage postcards of Minehead, Somerset

As I wasn't sure where I'd be this weekend, I posted my Easter postcards last week ... so this week I'm going to share a few from somewhere in England where we have just spent a wonderful week in the most glorious weather imaginable. I think I went to Minehead, in Somerset, as a young child, and almost certainly to the Butlin's holiday camp there, but I only have the vaguest of memories of it. Last week, when we took our first trip down to the sea front it was bliss, with blazing sunshine yet hardly anyone around. The sunshine stayed with us all week and more people arrived, but still it did not feel over busy. The view of the quay in the first postcard below hasn't changed much except for a few more houses filling the horizon, but the view of Minehead from North Hill in the second postcard is barely recognisable. The green spaces beyond the beach have nearly all gone and the Butlin's holiday camp is ever present. There is a preserved steam railway in the town which links back almost all the way to the main line at Taunton but I can't quite make it out on the postcard - it was definitely an operational line in 1915 when the postcard was printed. The final postcard is of North Hill itself. When we looked up at this from the beach it looked lovely, and climbing to the top was wonderful, with some incredible houses, some big, others small ... but all beautiful and all brought on thoughts of retirement.

Happy Easter - vintage Easter postcards

I have definitely blogged about Easter postcards before but not sure I included these slightly more 'quirky' ones. Although a bit tatty, I like the first one best, and am curious of the use of the word 'attend' in that context ... seems unusual. Happy PFF and Happy Easter.

Sepia Saturday 70: Egyptian Camels

My vintage postcard collection is mainly focused on the UK, but of the other countries where I have a reasonable number of other postcards, Egypt is one of them. What I didn't realise until I looked through them was just how many featured camels, so perfect for following theme on this week's Sepia Saturday. The only thing missing is a politician ... but given that the Suez Canal is steeped in political history, I think that almost gives me the full theme set this week.

Vintage postcards of Norwich

For this week's PFF I thought I'd share a couple of vintage postcards from yet another place that I've only ever visited through my postcard collection ... Norwich, in the county of Norfolk. At probably 3 hours by car, it's not that far from where I live but travelling anywhere diagonally across England is never easy. By train I'm not even sure how I would travel there as the crow flies - I suspect I would have to go into London Paddington, across to Liverpool Street on the tube, and up to Norwich from there, which would be a minimum of 3 different trains. Even before the Beeching cuts of the 1960's, this journey would still have been a challenge by train without going via London. It feels like the sort of place to go to when you're not in a hurry.

Vintage postcards: Charles Dickens

I was very pleased to pick up these 3 wonderful postcards a few weeks ago. They are all from Raphael Tuck's In Dickens Land series, although each from a different series. What's also great about these postcards for me is that I've discovered a new postcard artist, P. Fletcher-Watson.

The Leather Bottle, Cobham, published by Raphael Tuck in the 'In Dickens Land' series II, number 1164, c.1909

Charles Dickens's House, Gadshill, published by Raphael Tuck in the 'In Dickens Land' series I, number 1163, c.1904
