Sunday Stamps 60 - Public Transportation

It's been a few weeks since I've participated in Sunday Stamps. Work has been manic, and the kids' social events seem to occupy most of the weekend. Can't say I'm looking forward to standing on the touchline this afternoon as it's grim weather here. I had quite a few public transportation related stamps to choose from but eventually decided on this one as it's quite unusual. Admittedly the stamp itself does not feature any mode of transportation, but the postmark and first day cover envelope all do, so I hope this slight deviation from the theme is ok :-)

The first day cover is of the final arrival at Southampton of the Queen Mary, 19th October 1967.

Sepia Saturday 115 - Games

For this week's Sepia Saturday theme of games I dug out this vintage postcard of a curious game called Pushball. You can read all about it here Pushball.

Sepia Saturday 114 - Shoes

I thought the theme for this week's Sepia Saturday, shoes, would be a relatively easy one, but when I looked through my vintage postcards I found that most of the postcards of people were either head or upper body shots. These that were full length were either of elegant ladies whose shoes were hidden under their long dresses, or men with fairly non-descript footwear. Determined not to give up and go 'off theme', and equally determined not to re-publish a post I did about horseshoes several months ago, I kept looking and eventually came across this postcard of George VI in a fine pair of shoes. Of course, the rest of the outfit is pretty impressive too.

Sepia Saturday 113 - Edwardian actresses

For once I have time on my hands, having taken-off the half-term week, and a relatively easy Sepia Saturday prompt to follow this week. I did post a blog entry about vintage postcards of actresses back in October 2010, but have a couple of recent acquisitions that I've not shared before.

Miss Lily Elise was famous for her part in the Merry Widow and went on to star in several more musicals.

Miss Mabel Love

Miss Mabel Love starred in a string of musicals, pantomimes and burlesques.

Sepia Saturday 112 - books

This week's Sepia Saturday theme of books forced me to go to a lower level of searching for something suitable. I've posted blog articles on various books before over on my vintage books and magazines blog but didn't want to re-use an old post so I turned instead to my vintage postcards. Unfortunately only one of them had the word book in the title of the postcard, well the title I'd filed it under, so I had to look through vast numbers of them until I found one that had a suitable image of a book. Hopefully you'll think it was worth the searching.

Theme Thursday - Corner

Sunday Stamps 56 - Southern Rhodesia

Very glad this week's Sunday Stamps is Anything You Wish as work this week has been absolutely manic and has taken away all of my creative thought. These stamps are a block of 6 green/brown 2d Southern Rhodesia stamps from 1943 commemorating 50 years of the province of Matabeleland. One of Matabeleand's claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of scouting, where Robert Baden-Powell met Frederick Russell Burnham.
