Sepia Saturday 120 - Library

Although I felt like I should rise to Alan's challenge of midget submarines for this week's Sepia Saturday I opted for the easier option of library. I think I may have posted at least one of these before, but as they fit the theme I thought no harm in showing them again.

Cambridge University

Not wanting Cambridge University to feel left out after my post last week about Oxford University, I've decided to share a few vintage postcards of the insides of some of the Cambridge colleges. I have posted about Cambridge colleges before but don't think I included these ones.

Sepia Saturday 75: Oxford University

Having quite a few vintage postcards of Oxford, I was able to be a "themer" again this week on Sepia Saturday, and was almost spoilt for choice as to which ones to include, so I've taken another detail from the theme ... inside at Oxford University colleges. The only thing missing from my postcards is people, which is a bit of a shame as the images look a little sterile.

Sepia postcards of Oxford and Cambridge

This week's Sepia Saturday post covers the Colleges of Oxford and Cambridge Universities. I have 50 or so vintage postcards of these places but the sepia ones are probably my favourite. Oxford is only about an hour's drive from where we live and a great place to visit ... even more so as I am a huge fan of the Inspector Morse and the Lewis mysteries which were filmed in and around the various Oxford colleges.

Cambridge is more of a hike for us, and despite having relatives living close by, it's not a place we visit very much. Looking at these postcards again makes me think we should make more of an effort to go there again soon.

Vintage postcards of Cambridge Colleges

Over the past week or so I have picked up a few more interesting vintage postcards of the various Cambridge Colleges. I must confess my ignorance at not even having heard of one of them before, Caius College (apparently pronounced 'keys').

Dreaming Spires - vintage postcards of Oxford Colleges

Over the years I seem to have accidentally built up a modest collection of vintage postcards of the various Oxford colleges. These vary from some admittedly quite dull cards of Jesus College, generally published by Frith, to some stunning artist drawn/artist signed postcards. The college which seems to come up most frequently is Magdalen College, with its Founders' Tower, and also Jesus, Queens and Christchurch. One of my favourite Oxford college postcard is the one I've show here. This is an artist drawn postcard of the New College Cloisters, by the artist ESC, and published by Alden. This postcard is not dated but would guess it's around the 1940's. I have no idea regarding the identity of E.S.C. My normally trusty postcard reference book let me down on this one.

I have also found plenty of vintage postcards of the Cambridge colleges such as Clare, Kings, Trinity and St. John's, with the latter probably being the most common. The postcard below shows the entrance to King's College and is published by valentine.

As always you can find these vintage postcards, and plenty of others on my vintage postcard website.
