Sepia Saturday 199 - vintage postcards of theatres

Having blogged a few times with vintage postcards of actresses and actors, I though that I'd diversify a bit for this week's Sepia Saturday and share some vintage postcards of theatres themselves.

First up with have the Greek Theatre at Bradfield College, Berkshire. More of an amphitheatre than a theatre though I think.

Next up is the Cliff Theatre in Cliftonville, Kent. I'm not sure which building is actually the theatre, and I can't see any cliffs either. I'm guessing it's within the building named "The Gay Parade".

Another open air theatre, this time in Devon. A lovely setting but I suspect you  might need to bring your own chair or blanket to this one.

The next two vintage postcards are both incarnations of the same theatre, the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, in Stratford-on-Avon. The first postcard shows the original theatre which was opened in 1879 but destroyed by fire in 1926.

The second postcard is of the theatre which was rebuilt there in 1932 and was apparently one of the first buildings to be designed by a woman architect.

Sepia Saturday 110 - Theatre

From Alan's submission for this week's Sepia Saturday I have selected Theatre. I couldn't decide which of my theatre vintage postcards to share to decided on a few of them. My favourite is probably the Greek Theatre at Bradfiled College, in Berkshire, which is not too far away from where I live, although I've never been there. I did see an open air Shakespeare production once at the Pangbourne theatre, where rain stopped play half-way through and the play had to contunie indoors.

Theme Thursday - Work

I think I blogged this postcard way back in 2009, but it seems to fit this week's Theme Thursday work quite well, so please forgive me for re-posting it. The postcard shows the dinner hour at the Huntley and Palmer's Biscuit Factory in Reading, Berkshire. I remember as a young child my father, although working in the Civil Service rather than a factory, would always come home for lunch. For most of us I suspect those days are long gone. Many of us have long commutes to work, some stay away during the week, and the thought of coming home for lunch seems quite alien now. In fact even having a lunch hour is quite a challenge, with many people grabbing a quick sandwich and returning to their desks to drop crumbs between the keys of their laptops. On the flip side of the coin though, many of us are fortunate enough to be able to work from home sometimes, so we're already at home for lunch. This postcard also has a feel of the 1960's/1970's kids' TV show  'Trumpton', or was is 'Chigley', about it, where a whistle blew at the end of the day and all the factory workers left for the day and danced.

Theme Thursday - Fence

A very short Theme Thursday entry this week as I've been crazily busy at work. Going through my various photographs, cards, postcards and magazines (at admittedly fairly high speed) these were the only ones which really seemed to fit the subject, but to be homest they are nowhere near as good as most of the other entries I've seen. Hopefully next week will find me with more time and creative energy.

Bridges of Great Britain

One of the things I do to take my mind off how steep a hill is when I'm out cycling is to occupy my mind with other activity. So it was about just over half-way up a steep climb on to the Wayfarer's Walk that I decided on today's blog theme ... bridges. I've tried to include my more interesting postcards here, the majority of which are artist drawn, although all with unique styles. I particularly like the artist style in the Tyne Bridge postcards, especially the cars.

Bridge on the Morrow, Monmouth, Wales, c.1918

Tyne Bridge, Newcastle-on-Tyne, by the artist G.W.Blow. Published by Valentine, number A1692.

Bishop's Bridge, Norwick, Norfolk, c.1914

The Canal Bridge, Newbury, Berkshire, c.1904, published by Valentine

Carrick-a-Rede, the Rope Bridge, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland

As usual these and hundred of vintage postcards like them can be found on my vintage postcards web pages
