Sepia Saturday 161 - Vintage postcard of Edwardian actor Kyrle Bellew

I studied this week's Sepia Saturday prompt closely this week but alas could not find anything to stay even remotely on theme, so have decided to go complete off theme this week. I picked up the vintage postcard below in a recent haul just before Christmas. I'd never heard of the actor in question, Mr Kyrle Bellew, but after a quick investigation I found he was quite a character with quite a history. Bellew spent much of his childhood in India before returning to England and joining the Navy where he spent time aboard HMS Conway, before finally turning to acting, where he spent much of his stage career alongside Mrs Brown-Potter (who funnily enough I also have a vintage postcard of ... this was not planned when I started my post).

As usual, 100's more vintage postcards on my web site

  1. They look like they might have made a handsome couple on the screen.

  2. His face has some echoes of Charlie Chapin?

  3. What a coincidence. You must have been shocked when you found you had those two post cards which were related.

  4. Quite the characters. These early theater people intrigue me so I looked them up. Kyrle's full name was Harold Kyrle Money Bellew, and Mrs. Potter was Cora Urquhart Brown-Potter. I'd love to hear their dramatic pronunciations of their own names. They did much more traveling than I would have guessed - Britain, Australia, New York, Salt Lake City!

  5. This is the nice thing about SS: off theme = on theme. Auntie Miriam is so permissive :)

  6. And the postcards look as if they are from the same published series too - quite a coincidence.

  7. I like how the one of him is lightly tinted. That is neat that you ended up with a matching pair.

  10. I love the way the hand-colouring on that first card was somewhat "economical". Great cards.
