Sepia Saturday 134 - oh baby baby

I can't remember if I have shared these carte de visite before, but they seem to fit well with this week's Sepia Saturday theme. Not sure about a date, but I would guess these go back to the early 1900's. The child in the first CDV looks quite alert and potentially mischevious, whereas the one in the second CDV does not look at all happy, with a stuck out lower lip.

CDV published by Beales and Sons, New Road, Spalding

CDV published by The Park Studio, Henry Spink, Preston Road, Brighton

  1. I think the first one looks fearful of falling off that chair. Both are lovely cards. I'm glad you appreciate them because I'm always sad to see baby pictures at antique and thrift shops.

  3. How funny! No 1 looks slightly surprised and No 2 looks grumpy.

  5. The portrait by Henry Spink Jr must have been taken prior to 1890, as by that date he had moved premises to his father's old studio at 109, Western Road (Brighton Photographers). He only started operating under his own name in 1887, which gives a fairly narrow time frame of 1887-1890 for the photo.

Judging by the style of portrait and card mount, I estimate that the Beales & Sons portrait was taken around the same time frame.

  6. Such cute babies - I do love to see a barefoot baby like the one in the first photo. I'm sure they enjoy being free to wiggle their toes. :)

  7. It’s probably the age difference. The first one is curious and the second one hasn’t a clue what’s going on!

  8. Has the second one got wind? Great cards.
