Sepia Saturday 78: Not the tallest but one of the greatest

Apologies for the somewhat bold claim in the title of my post this week for Sepia Saturday, but it's how I feel about Big Ben ... ok so that's not quite factually correct as Big Ben is actually the name of the great bell inside the clock, but its use as the name of the whole structure is now common place. Whilst it may not be the tallest building ever made, to my mind it's one of the most impressive. This vintage postcard sums it up for me quite nicely, and the sky in the background is looking quite impressive, albeit in a menacing way, as well.

  2. Yes I agree; somehow that sky is more menacing in sepia!

  3. It IS one of the greatest :-)
I've always liked the way it looks, it's so ehm sort of solemn :-)
I feel so lucky heard it strike, even if just twice ^^
I just love it and seriously one day I'd stand in front of it 24h to hear it strike so many times! :-D
So beautiful it makes me cry every time :')
Great postcard, if it was mine it'd be hanging on a wall ;-)

  6. A great card for a great building even if the sepia makes it a bit sinister.

  8. Great postcard. Pity about the idiots who work in the building below

  9. Since my surname is Stevens, I like its real name (St. Stephens Clock Tower).

  10. One of my favorite stories from when I lived in London, was hearing two Chinese men trying to get a London cabbie to take them to "baked bean". I managed to do the translation for him!

  11. Nice postcard. Whenever I see a photo of Big Ben, I think of a photograph I once saw of someone cleaning the clock face - a pretty weird image, really.

  12. Love the clouds in this image. Very striking.

Funny but I've never thought of it as a building. It has always just seemed a clock tower. Now I need to rethink this and imagine people running around inside.
