Sepia Saturday 131 - all the fun of the fair

I know I have shared one of these vintage postcards before when I wrote a posting about the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition last year some time, but please excuse me for a degree of repetition as they seem to fit this week's Sepia Saturday theme quite well. They are both vintage postcards of a ride called Flip-Flap which boatsed 150 foot arms topped with carriages, each holding 40 or so people, providing them with spectacular views as far out as Windsor and Crystal Palace.

  2. Kathy can FlipFlap all she wants -- I'll be on the merry-go-round, thank-you. Or maybe trying my hand at throwing rings over bottles in hopes of winning a stuffed animal. Any idea how safe those rides were in 1908? Any disasters associated with that ride?

  3. At first I thought it was Blackpool and I was having a problem with double vision. I wouldn't get near a ride like this though - I probably would have double vision when it was over.

  5. My stomach would flip and I’d be IN a flap!

  6. I'd have no stomach for this. Do you have any idea where the Elite Gardens were located?

  7. I especially like the second postcard. I would enjoy the views, but I am afraid of heights and wouldn't enjoy flipping and flapping.

  8. Like the postcards and the ride looks fun. Imagine the riders were rewarded with an amazing view when they reached top.

  9. 1908! I didn't realise that they had such rides back then. I wonder how safe it was?

  10. I wonder if you have to wear flip flops to ride the flip flap!
