Sepia Saturday 139 - bones

I'm back in this week after an absence of almost 4 weeks while I've been in California (more of which later as I update my In Search of Space blog during the week). I can't say I have many pictures of bones in my collection to follow this week's Sepia Saturday theme. Dogs seemed a more obvious theme, but as I have posted blog entries about dogs before, I decided to stick with my only vintage postcard which features bones. These are, I assume, bones from a whale jaw and as far as I can make out are still there today.

Jaw Bones, Teignmouth, Devon

As usual 100's more vintage postcards on my web site

  1. I can't even think about an animal with a jawbone that large. Amazing!

  2. We have similar whalebones in Scotland - a famous one on top of North Berwick Law collapsed a few years ago and was replaced with a fibre glass replica :-) Hope you had a good holiday. Jo

  3. Uau!
A long time I don't leave a comment, but I always follow you and this picture is really interesting, it reminds me of an ancestor I have who was a whale hunter in north Europe :-O
I'd love to see California too one day *.*

  4. Wow! So interesting that the whale jaw bones were placed there on what appears to be a walkway.

  5. This whalebone is not the same as the whalebones, the baleen, which were the structural support of women's undergarments in centuries past. This massive bone was actually used in treeless arctic regions for roof timbers.

  7. Although it is said that I have a big mouth at times, my jaw bones come nowhere near these :)

  9. I have just commented on a post about a whalebone in the States and I mentioned the one in Whitby. Yours makes a full set.

  10. I recognized the porch of whalebones. I've seen a smaller porch on the island Schiermonnikoog, Netherlands.
