Sepia Saturday 113 - Edwardian actresses

For once I have time on my hands, having taken-off the half-term week, and a relatively easy Sepia Saturday prompt to follow this week. I did post a blog entry about vintage postcards of actresses back in October 2010, but have a couple of recent acquisitions that I've not shared before.

Miss Lily Elise, c.1911

Miss Lily Elise was famous for her part in the Merry Widow and went on to star in several more musicals.

Miss Mabel Love

Miss Mabel Love starred in a string of musicals, pantomimes and burlesques.

You can see a few more vintage postcards of actresses on my Flickr pages, and as usual 100's more vintage postcards can be found on my web site

  1. I'm not a student of theater and film history, but looking at these innocent young faces makes me wonder what the tabloids would do to them today.

  3. I haven't heard of these ladies either, but they are remarkable beauties and I'm sure had a long list of admirers!

  4. Pretty girls and I wonder if those were their real names!

  5. The first one would be good for a hat theme too. I bet Mabel's real name wasn't Love.

  9. The first one has everything, a tea set, book, roses around the door and a suitably flowered hat.

  10. These two ladies are lovely and made me curious about how you got started collecting vintage postcards, which sent me to your archives in search of your first post. It is indeed an interesting hobby.

  11. Interesting girls. Were these collectibles at the time or intended for postal use? They must have had an influence on fashions and styles.

  12. I've heard of Billie Dove, but not Mabel Love. They just don't have great names like that these days.
