As regular readers will know, occasionally I deviate from the postcard theme on this blog and sometimes blog about related topics - today is one of those days. It's been a few weeks since I've taken part in Sunday Stamps, but having managed to strain my back all the gardening I planned to do this weekend has been put on hold, so I now have more time for blogging. This week's prompt was to 'share anyone honoured by a stamp'. I had a quick scan through my First Day Cover collection and decided upon this one, 'British Polar Explorers', from 1972.
From top left, moving clockwise, they are ...
James Clarke Ross (1800 - 1862)
Martin Frobisher (1535 - 1594)
Robert Falcon Scott (1869 - 1912)
Henry Hudson (1560 - 1611)

I looked at this set on a stamp stall on Stockton market this week. They are great stamps.
ReplyDeletethats such a fantastic FDC!! I LOVE it!! Unfortunately, only the name of Robert Scott rings a bell here....
ReplyDeletehave a nice Sunday and hope your back gets better soon :)
have always loved that set of commemoratives! you've just reminded me to go and check out Sunday Stamps too!
ReplyDeleteThe two sets of explorers issued at that time are one of my favourites, stunning cover.
ReplyDeleteThat's an attractive cover. I never knew there were so many British polar explorers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic FDC and a great way for these brave men to be honoured. Unfortunately, this is the first time I've heard of all four of them. I'm glad you shared them this week - additional learning for my knowledge bank.

ReplyDeleteHere is my Sunday Stamp
I have read alot about North polar exploration - great stamps! His contemporaries (esp. the ladies) thought Ross was the handsomest man in the Navy.
ReplyDeleteTop Right Looks Like That Bloke From Blackadder!
ReplyDeleteI Hope Your Back Is On The Mend.
