Sepia Saturday 127 - market

I was going to take cattle from the photo prompt for this week's Sepia Saturday, but as I've done that before, I decided to go with markets instead. Here are a selection of vintage postcards of markets. I visited Dunster last summer and the Yarn Market is still there but the street looks somewhat different, and I seem to recall quite a traffic bottleneck in places. The Covent Garden shown in the second postcard is the same premises as occupied by the existing Covent Garden, but the market aspect of ot has moved to New Covent Garden Market in South London, with the old Covent Garden being filled with shops, pubs and cafes. Unfortunately I don't know much about the third postcard as I don't think I've ever been to Ross, although we did come close last weekend when we toured around Herefordshire.

Yarn Market, Dunster, Somerset

Covent Garden Market, London

Market House, Ross

As usual, 100's more vintage postcards on my web site

  1. Although I'm not a knitter or crocheter, I imagine a yarn market would be fun to visit -- all the colors and textures. I can't stand a "Do not touch" sign.

  2. I agree with Wendy. I'd think a yarn market would be a lovely place to visit.

  3. I hope they don't tell tall stories at a yarn market. I've been near Ross several times, it looks a place I should stop and take a look at.

  4. I guess like the others the idea of a Yarn Market is intriguing.

  5. I love markets like the second one - in those big spacious buildings. But the smells aren't usually too nice!

  6. What I find so impressive are the buildings. They are just amazing....and the amount of days that so many of them have stood and the many more moons they shall see!

  7. Great postcard views, thank you. That market hall in Ross looks like so many such buildings in the centres of small to medium-sized English towns, where they have survived. It would be good to see them full of produce again, but all too often I think they get taken over by craft and knick-knack stalls, the market gardeners/being forced out by low prices in the supermarkets.

  8. Co-incidentally I have just 'relieved' my parents of a batch of interesting postcards on my recent trip back to UK and there is one of the Yarn market! I saved that one thinking it may come in sometime. I had to pick a few PCs and ditch the rest (you're probably shouting at me) as I couldn't bring them all back. Let's hope I made the right choices, inspired by the cards I usually see on here.

  10. My favorite is the Covent Garden Market card. That looks the most like a market to me.

  13. Great postcards - they make me want to visit a market! The building on the left in the Ross market postcard reminds me of the buildings in Chester, England.
