Sepia Saturday 123 - May time

I've been away in India all week and have only just returned, so only time for the briefest of Sepia Saturday postings from me this week. I don't have anything to do with May poles, but I do have a vintage postcard called May time on the Ching, Epping Forest. The postcard was published by Hildesheimer and dates back to 1908.

Postcard Friendship Friday 94 - Wolf

This is not exactly a Christmas postcard, but it does have snow in the background so sort of counts. This is quite an unusual vintage postcard of a Wolf, published by S.Hildesheimer, c.1905. What's unusual about it, to my mind anyway, is that all the other Hildesheimer postcards I have are landscapes, and perhaps a couple of other subjects like children or ships, but never before have I come across an animal.

Postcard Friendship Friday 92

Having blogged a different vintage Christmas postcard pretty much every day in December 2010, I'm trying to avoid blogging the same ones again this year. Pretty sure the one below is a relatively recent arrival. It's a beautiful, artist drawn, postcard of Oxford Cathedral. The publisher is S.Hildesheimer (one of my favourite publishers) and the card dates back to 1909. Unfortunetaly there's no artist name on either side of the postcard.

By the way, anyone wanting to see the 25 vintage Christmas postcards and cards I shared last year can look at my vintage postcard advent calendar ... but no peeking (in fact if my somewhat primitive code logic still works this year then it shouldn't allow you to peek past the current day).

Sepia Saturday 95 - Letter From Mama

Try as I may, for this week's Sepia Saturday I am alas not theming. Instead I am offering up a vintage postcard called 'Letter From Mama', c.1903. The postcard was published by S.Hildesheimer and the written greeting reads 'We have received a letter from M to say they will not be able to visit us on Sunday. Love from all.' Maybe however, one of these girls moved to Denmark and became a suffragette, or maybe the letter is from their mother, who happened to be a suffragette in Denmark.Alternatively I could just be clutching at straws trying to make up for my inability to theme this week.

Vintage postcard of Penzance, c.1907

I picked up this vintage postcard a couple of weeks ago in a batch of 200 or so. To be honest I kept moving it lower down in the pile as it's quite tatty, but having taken the time to look at it in more detail this evening, I think it's really quite beautiful. The colours of the sky are incredible and feel very autumnal, which is just about right as the leaves start to turn here in the UK. The postcard is of Penzance, Cornwall, c.1907 and was published by S.Hildesheimer in the Cornish Views series, number 5377. The artist is Robert Gallon.

Vintage Postcard of London Bridge in Torquay, Devon

Thought I'd share another of my new batch of vintage postcards for this week's Postcard Friendship Friday. This is of London Bridge, but it's not in London, it's actually a limestone arch, in Torquay, Devon. The postcard was published by S.Hildesheimer. It's postally unused so I can't be sure of the date. but these card normally date back to 1905 - 1911. The postcard is artist drawn but I cannot see any indication of the artist's name. If anyone has any more information I'd love to know.

Theme Thursday: Bridge

Once again it's my vintage postcards which come to my aid for this week's Theme Thursday, Bridge. I did have quite a lot to choose from but have already posted some of these in a bridges of Great Britain posting I did back in 2010. I double-checked and know for certain that I did not include this one though, so here it is. It's The Hermitage Bridge, at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland, c.1904. It was published by one of my favourite postcard publishers, S.Hildesheimer, and the artist was Ernest Longstaffe.

Vintage postcard of a rough sea, by artist Elmer Keene

I know I've blogged about vintage postcards of stormy seas in the past, but this one just-in tops all the others I have. The postcard was published by S.Hildesheimer and the artist is Elmer Keene. Unusually the postcard doesn't say where it is, but it looks like there may be some abbey ruin on the cliff in the background - does anyone have any ideas? It reminds me a little of Whitby on the east coast of the UK where Dracula landed. The postcard was posted in 1906.

Vintage postcards of ships by the artist Seppings Wright

Anyone who's read my previous blog entries will know that I'm a big fan of the publisher S.Hildesheimer, and also artist drawn/signed vintage postcards, particularly when I discover a new artist. Well, the batch of postcards which arrived this week included several of both!! I'm in a bit of a rush but thought I'd just share these 3 with you for now. The artist is Seppings Wright and all the postcards are of sailing ships, dating to around 1904.

I have another 3 postcards in the same series which I'll try and post later in the week, but in the meantime I hope you all enjoy the 3 above.

Thanks Alan for giving me an albeit tenuous link to the Peak District in his latest Sepia Saturday posting, but instead I'm going to stick with the cattle theme. I seem to have accumulated quite a few of these type of postcards over the years. Whilst not sepia, theyseem to fit.
