Theme Thursday: Bridge

Once again it's my vintage postcards which come to my aid for this week's Theme Thursday, Bridge. I did have quite a lot to choose from but have already posted some of these in a bridges of Great Britain posting I did back in 2010. I double-checked and know for certain that I did not include this one though, so here it is. It's The Hermitage Bridge, at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland, c.1904. It was published by one of my favourite postcard publishers, S.Hildesheimer, and the artist was Ernest Longstaffe.

Sepia Saturday 64: Cattle

Thanks Alan for giving me an albeit tenuous link to the Peak District in his latest Sepia Saturday posting, but instead I'm going to stick with the cattle theme. I seem to have accumulated quite a few of these type of postcards over the years. Whilst not sepia, theyseem to fit.

Vintage postcard advent calendar - December 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th

I didn't quite plan to post 4 days in one but the weather in Europe this week changed my plans. Following a delayed flight to Cologne which was diverted to Frankfurt because Cologne airport was briefly closed and the plane did not have enough fuel to continue circling, we eventually arrived at Cologne some 4 hours late at 2am. This was followed by 2 days of meetings and a bit of Christmas partying, so needless to say even though I'd prepared myself to upload in my absence there was no time - I must investigate the 'post options' for a future time. Anyway, enough rambling, below are the vintage postcards and cards for December 14th - 17th.

Glasgow and Loch Lomond

Well the Edinburgh Marathon is now behind us and we've moved on to Glasgow. Thanks to all those who wished my wife well - on an incredibly hot day she recorded an excellent time of 4 hours and 19 minutes. The blisters were only minor and we managed to walk up to Edinburgh Castle the following day.

My vintage postcards of Glasgow are nowhere near as plentiful as those of Edinburgh, but what few I have are shared below. Also, as our journey has including some of the surrounding contryside, I've also included some from places like Loch Lomond and Largs. From Largs we took a day trip by boat to the Island of Cumbrae - very beautiful, and great views across the nearby islands as well. I now have an apetite for more.

Vintage postcards - Christmas

Quite excited today as I have made lots of new discoveries (well, they're new to me anyway) ... I discovered a new subcategory of vintage postcards, that of vintage Christmas postcards, one of which was drawn by a postcard artist previously unknown to me, H.W.Cowderoy. I have also found out that an artist whom I only previously associated with landscapes, Ernest Longstaffe, has also produced Christmas postcards.

Aside from the magic generally associated with Christmas, there's something extra special about these postcards in that they have a purity and innocence that sadly seems to have been swept away by the consumerism now associated with the festive season.

And to round off my pre-festive cheer, I have also discovered that one of my favourite vintage postcard publishers, Raphael Tuck, produced not only Christmas postcards but also Christmas cards as well. Some of these are quite intricate, often with embossed lettering and picture, or perhaps a cut-out, and bound with a piece of ribbon or coloured string.

It will probably be some time before I list these cards and postcards on my site, if at all as they're so beautiful, but I do have quite a few other Raphael Tuck vintage postcards for sale at the moment.
