Vintage postcards by the artist A.R.Quinton

One of my favourite postcard artists is A.R.Quinton (1853–1934). Alfred Robert Quinton was an English watercolour artist who mainly painted British landscapes and villages. Hundreds of his works were published as postcards by J.Salmon. It's been a while since I've come across any but was delighted last weekend when I came by a small treasure trove of them. Here are a few of my favourites.

Vintage postcards of Dorset

Although I've just enjoyed a fantastic holiday on the west coast of France, one of my favourite holiday destinations remains Dorset in the UK. Fortunately we live close enough to visit much of it in a longish day trip. The great thing about Dorset is that there's so much variety within such a relatively small area. Probably my favourite parts are Swanage, which has retaind its attraction as a seaside resort without becoming to busy or modern, and also Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door for its fascinating geology. Corfe Castle is also a favourite, particularly when driving towards it at sunset when it's silhouetted against the evening sky.

And finally for today's update, I was fortunate enough to be up in London yesterday when the Picture Postcard Fair was taking place. I managed to go along for a couple of hours after work and picked up a few goodies which will form blog entries in the days, weeks and months to come.

Watercolour artist, A.R.Quinton

Today's blog post covers another of my favourite vintage postcards, A.R.Quinton. Upon researching him for this posting, I was amazed to find out he'd produced something in the region of 2,000 watercolours of British town and country scenes, many of which ended up as postcards. All the A.R.Quinton postcards I have were published by J.Salmon Ltd., but he's also had cards published by Raphael Tuck. Rather than showing too many here at one time, I've decided to share a handful of my favourites.
