Sunday Stamps 29 - Ceylon

I suppose like many people of my age, stamp collections were passed down through parents and relatives. I can't say that my parents actually had a stamp collection as such, but I do remember one day being handed a box which contained hundreds of stamps that they had accumulated, rather than collected, throughout the years. This was back in the early 1970's, and the stamps in the box were, as a far as I can remember, all from the various British colonial outposts that my relatives had visited and sent cards and letters home from. I have plenty to choose from but these 3 are probably my favourite. I'm not sure if they are from the same set, but have always felt they were. The stamps are from left to right ... 9c Plucking Tea, 6c Colombo Harbour, 2c Tapping Rubber.

Theme Thursday 28: Letter

I'm playing catch-up with my blog entries this week as we've been away for a couple of days. Another great theme for Theme Thursday this week ... and this is my submission. This is a coloured gravure lettercard featuring six views of Penzance. The front cover of this lettercard is much more interesting than the pictures within so have restricted this post to just sharing one.

Postcard Friendship Friday 73

Once again we seem to have quite a hectic weekend planned, so unfortunately not much time to devote to blogging today. I certainly have nothing rodent related to match the original Postcard Friendship Friday post, so instead have chosen something from my collection which I've always meant to share but don't think I've ever got around to doing so. The postcard was written in 1903 and the sender had so much to write that not only have they filled the back of the postcard but have also written all over the violets on the front. I don't have a scan of the back of the card, but it ends with the words "Are they missing me at home", so maybe from someone gone into household or military service? It's not been posted and I think judging from the message was included in an envelope with other letters.

Theme Thursday: Country

As a vintage postcard collector, this week's Theme Thursday of 'country' was, on first glance, one of the easiest for me to participate in. However, the dilemma now comes as to which postcard(s) to choose ... I eventually decided on this one.

Sunday Stamps 27: Birds

I had quite a choice for this week's Sunday Stamps theme but in the end decided on this set of 4 bird stamps from Great Britain, c.1966. Clockwise from top left they are: Robin, Blue Tit, Blackbird and Black Headed Gull. I still see the first 3 on a regular basis in my garden, but the gull is generally only seen on the coast.

Postcard Friendship Friday 72: Summer

It would seem that the sun is also not going to make much of an appearance where I live in the UK this weekend, so you're not alone. I found one of my favourite sunset vintage postcards to share for this week's Postcard Friendship Friday to try and bring some sunshine into our lives.

Theme Thursday: Square

I'm a bit late again this week for Theme Thursday as I've been working away this week. I like the 'square' theme and have found something that fits the theme in 2 ways.

Sunday Stamps 26: the British Army

Good to see Sunday Stamps back again this week after a week off. Interesting to see that this week's theme was inspired because of all the national holidays in July - here in the UK we don't have any at all in July, although we did have plenty in April this year because of the Royal Wedding. So, a belated Happy 4th July to all my US friends. In terms of patriotic stamps I was a bit spolit for choice as I think almost all of our stamps have the Queen on them in some form or other, but after looking through my First Day Cover collection I came across this one from 1983. It shows various regiments of the British Army throughout the ages. The Parachute Regiment, the Irish Guards, the Royal Green Jackets, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and the Royal Scots.

Postcard Friendship Friday 71

Interesting theme this week on Postcard Friendship Friday. Children definitely grow up far too early these days and the purity and innocence of childhood doesn't seem to exist in the same form any more. I thought these two vintage postcards captured the innocence of long lost childhood quite nicely.

Sepia Saturday 82: Engine Number 1

Trying to stay on theme this week for Sepia Saturday was quite a challenge. Ideally I would have liked to have been able to choose from a huge collection of vintage railway postcards, but don't have very many at all in my collection. I did find this one however, which although not of a station building, is train related.

After having a bit of a mad week at work, I am rather behind in my blog updates. Hopefully however it's not too late to which everybody a belated happy Postcard Friendship Friday, even though it's Sunday afternoon here in the UK. The in-laws are about to come round for a BBQ so I only have a few spare minutes where I've managed to sneak away to post this. This postcard is of the Moot Hall, in the small seaside town called Aldeurgh, which is on the Suffolk coast, not far from Southwold. The Hall was built in the first half of the 16th century, and the term 'Moot Hall' means a meeting or assembly building. The building is still standing today and is where the Town Council still meets. The postcard artist is Parsons Norman, who is yet another postcard artist where this is the only card I have, and it was posted in 1925.

Sepia Saturday 81: Lady on a bike

Welcome back Alan. I've picked up on the hats in this week's Sepia Saturday post, and delved deep into my postcard collection for this one. The postcard is unused and has no publisher details, so unfortunately I don't know the date or location. It does looks slightly odd however in that the tyres of the bike look a bit too modern for the style of bike and style of dress.
