Vintage postcards of the Scottish Highlands

So the theme I've chosen today is the Scottish Highlands, or perhaps more specifically, cattle in the Scottish Highlands. For me there's just something special about these postcards. Part of it is the beautiful use of colour, particularly in the second card, but also the feeling that I could almost be there when I look at the picture.

The first postcard is called Midst Hill and Heather, and is published by Raphael Tuck, number 9441.

The second postcard is an Olio postcard and was published by A.G.&Co., number 0293.

Vintage birthday greeting postcards

A couple more real photographic, vintage birthday greeting postcards. These are both written to John with love from his grannie. Although the postcards have been written they have not been posted so I'm not sure of their age. They have no publisher name but are numbered 4373 and 4374 respectively.

Humourous vintage postcards

Today's blog entry showcases a couple of Edwardian 'humour' postcards. They are both published by Mint Heritage Ltd., which until I found these cards was a publishing house I'd not heard of. The postcards are in such good condition I'm almost tempted to suggest they might be reproductions, but my research has only surfaced originals, dating to 1905.

Vintage postcards of Tiger Hunting

I'm certainly not condoning this, but thought these vintage postcards of tiger hunting, c.1922, offered an interesting, if perhaps misguided, glimpse back into the past. They are artist drawn / artist signed, oilette postcards by the artist Edgar H. Fischer, and published by Raphael Tuck, in the 'Tiger Hunting' series number 8780. The text in quotes below each picture is taken from the back of the card; the text after the quotes perhaps not.

"Tiger Hunting - The end crowns all things and after the crowded hour of glorious life spent in the risks, adventure and hair-breadth escapes of tiger hunting, it is good to dismount and inspect a right royal specimen, ten feet at least, from head to tip of tail. We can see at a glance that the skin is beautifully marked and that the sportsman is more than satisfied" ... bet the tiger was mightily cheesed off though!

"Tiger Hunting - Many modes are adopted for killing so ferocious a beast; some very ingenious. The spring-bow which is set so that it is discharged by the animal itself; the pitfall from which it cannot escape; the leaves smeared with bird lime by which the tiger is blinded. Among Europeans however, the sportsmen hunt the tiger mounted on elephants and furnished with a perfect battery of loaded rifles" ... some sportsman eh?

Vintage postcards of flowers

I actually managed to fit in a bike ride and some gardening today, so not much time for the blog, so just a short post regarding some vintage postcards of flowers that have just arrived. Up to today, the only flowers I've had on postcards have been those on birthday greeting postcards, and to be honest slightly tacky. However, the batch of postcards that arrived today have some beautiful, hand drawn flowers, often with detailed descriptions on the back. I've only got time to share a couple this evening but over the next few days hope to get them at list on to a Flickr set ... I'll write a quick blog update with the link once I've uploaded them.

The Bougainvillia, Lili postcard from Bermuda, number 8, Ektachrome by Bermuda Photo Craftsmen, printed in Scotland by Robert MacLehose & Co. Ltd., Glasgow

The Bougainvillia, named after a French sea adventurer, is a high-climbing, thorny vine from Brazil. A British admiral planted the first vine at Government House in 1876.

Vintage birthday greetings postcard by the artist Maude Scrivener, c.1910

Just a short blog entry today, but something which caught my eye so I though I'd share it. This is a beautiful vintage birthday greetings card, by the artist Maude Scrivener. The postcard features 2 Tortoiseshell butterflies. It was posted in Beckles in 1910, with the written greeting, 'Dear Mrs R, Best wishes for a Happy Birthday and many happy returns. Yours sincerely, Maudie G'. This is not a postcard artist I've come across before but definitely one I shall be keeping an eye open for.
